Three artists collide in a morphing, beat-driven collaboration Dafnis Prieto Proverb Trio, featuring drummer and percussionist Dafnis Prieto, emcee Kokayi Issa, and keyboardist Jason Linder.
A classically trained musician who absorbed the multifaceted percussive traditions of his native Cuba from an early age, Dafnis Prieto transposes elements from his Afro-Cuban musical heritage onto a jazz drum kit, incorporating congas, timbales and the layered rhythmic patterns of rumba and son. Prieto’s numerous accolades include a Macarthur Fellowship Award in 2011 and being named “Up & Coming Musician of the Year” by the Jazz Journalists Association in 2006. In 2007, he was nominated for Best Latin Jazz Album at the Grammy Awards and Best New Artist at the Latin Grammy Awards.
Grammy-nominated Kokayi Issa’s prolific output keeps him busy on multiple fronts, whether he is producing songs for Ethiopian songstress Wayna or iconic pop-culture channel MTV, or focusing on his own projects like electro-hop duo “Dastardly” and Afropunk outfit “The Caesarz.”
Hailed as a “musical universe” by Chick Corea, Jason Lindner first gained acclaim for his long-running big band’s release on Corea’s label. Starting in hip-hop roots, Lindner’s exploration of “world music” from Latin America and the Middle East led him to collaborations with legendary bassist Avishai Cohen, Croatian superstar Oliver Dragojavich, and most recently with the New York Gypsy All Stars. This recent connection with Prieto and Issa tempts the international musical influences from all three artists, each merging styles from all different sections of the globe.
