Cimafunk

Aug 12, Saturday - 4pm
Sobrato Organization Main Stage

Cimafunk is a Grammy Award-nominated Afro-Cuban rockstar. His name refers to his heritage as a “cimarrón,” a Cuban of African descent who resisted and escaped slavery, as well as to the essence of his music that subverts classical Cuban rhythms with innovative mixes of funk, Afrobeat and hip-hop.

Prior to joining Los Boys in 2014, Erik Iglesias Rodriguez had joined the Hermanos Saiz Association in 2010, and Interactivo in 2014, which represented various trends of Cuban music. During the fall of 2016, Erik left Los Boys and started his own “solo” career under the artistic name of Cimafunk.

His inspirations come from an eclectic selection of black music: from the funk of James Brown, George Clinton and Prince, and the soul of Al Green and Bill Withers, to the Cuban “Trova” of Beny Moré and Bola de Nieve and “songo” of  Juan Formell y Los Van Van.

Cimafunk has received overwhelming praise while touring the US and Europe, making a name for himself as one of the great performers of his generation and delivering an electric live show with La Tribu, his nine-person band from Havana. His live show is a celebration of groove that redefines contemporary Cuban music, Afro-Latin identity and the fusion of black cultures. His latest album, El Alimento, was nominated at the 2023 Grammy Awards for Best Latin Rock or Alternative Album.
