Erik Jekabson Quintet

Aug 11, Saturday - 5pm
Heritage Bank Cafe Stritch Stage

Whether leading his heralded Electric Squeezebox Orchestra big band or guiding the Young Musicians Program at the California Jazz Conservatory, trumpeter Erik Jekabson dance card is constantly full. For 2018 Summer Fest, he’ll lead his powerhouse quintet focusing on his fierce trumpeting skills.

After earning a Bachelor’s Degree in Jazz Trumpet from Oberlin Conservatory of Music and a Master’s in Classical Composition from the San Francisco Conservatory of Music, the Berkeley High School alumnus has put his many talents to use in various pursuits. He’s arranged for vocalists such as Jane Krakowski, Madeleine Peyroux and Ani DiFranco and gigged with the likes of tenor saxophone great Illinois Jacquet and singer/songwriter John Mayer.

Residing in El Cerrito, he’s able to take advantage of the Bay Area’s many musical opportunities by leading several different ensembles and also playing with the likes of Jazz Mafia, Realistic Orchestra, vocalist Lavay Smith, bassist Marcus Shelby and conguero John Santos.

It’s with his quintet that Jekabson arguably shines the brightest, and his showcase at this year’s Summer Fest will place the well-deserved spotlight on his instrumental, compositional and arranging skills.
