Etienne Charles & Creole Soul

Aug 8, Saturday - 6pm
Umpqua Bank Stage

Composer, arranger, recording artist, and educator Etienne Charles is one of the most exciting young jazz artists on the scene, ushering the genre into groundbreaking new territory. The trumpeter and bandleader, still in his twenties, has already recorded three impressive albums for his own label, Culture Shock Music.

Charles’ latest album Creole Soul is a captivating journey of new jazz expression, tapping into a myriad of styles rooted into his Afro-Caribbean background. While the album is steeped in the jazz tradition, Charles delivers a unique spin on Creole-oriented tunes, including covers from past masters ranging from Bob Marley to Thelonious Monk. Joining the leader for this Creole musical adventure is Charles’ band, comprised of  Brian Hogans, alto saxophone; Victor Gould, piano; Ben Williams, bass; and John Davis, drums. Charles and his band will also present the world premiere his San Jose Suite at Summer Fest 2015 on Sat Aug 8, at the California Theatre Stage (All Stages or higher Fest access required).

Etienne Charles has performed with a vast range of musicians, from Roberta Flack, Rene Marie, and David Rudder to Wynton Marsalis, Johnny Mandel, and the Count Basie Orchestra. In addition to his talents as a musician, Charles is Assistant Professor of Jazz Studies at Michigan State University.

NOTE: This performance is funded by a grant from the Castellano Family Foundation.
