Incognito

Aug 9, Friday - 9:30pm
Jay Paul Company Main Stage

For more than four decades, Incognito—the British band co-founded and still led by singer, guitarist, composer and producer Jean-Paul “Bluey” Maunick—has explored the connections between jazz, funk and soul. Their vibrant, joyous live shows and innovative recordings have brought them a worldwide audience.

Incognito released their debut album, Jazz Funk, in 1981 and made an immediate impact with their powerful instrumental sound. They soon expanded their focus, utilizing sequencers and samplers in the late ’80s, which were evident by their 1991 album, Inside Life. An update of Stevie Wonder’s ’s “Don’t You Worry ’Bout a Thing” was a standout on their Tribes, Vibes + Scribes album, which blew up on radio and sold almost a million copies worldwide.

The albums that followed “Tribes” cemented Incognito’s place among the in-demand bands on the international stage, particularly 1993’s Positivity, 1995’s 100° and Rising and 1999’s No Time Like the Future. Their 19th album, Into You, was released in 2023.

Today, Bluey carries on the legacy of Incognito—which features an ever-revolving lineup in order to keep things fresh—with both new recordings and powerful, energetic live shows. They give him a chance to get close to his audience. “It’s not about playing the tune just to get applause,” he says. “It’s about communicating, making sure people get it. It’s a wonderful time for music.”
