Initially inspired and mentored by his father, Ramirez grew up surrounded by the music community with his father bringing musician friends over to play, rehearse music and share new international melodies.
His first solo recorded project, Pomponio, spent several weeks on the Jazz Week top 50 chart. The success of this album propelled his group, the Jemal Ramirez Group, to perform at several Bay Area venues, such as, Cafe Stritch, Cafe Pink House in Saratoga, Piedmont Pianos in Oakland, North Coast Brewery in Fort Bragg and the Berkeley radio station KPFA. More recently, his second album African Skies, was welcomed nationally and peaked on the Jazz Week Chart at #9.
Ramirez has worked and performed with a vast number of artists including Benny Green, the members of Wynton Marsalis’ band, David McKinney, Calvin Keyes, Howard Wiley, Matthew Clark, Dmitri Matheny, Dave Ellis, Bob Kenmotsu and many more, including touring internationally with the Eric Reed Trio.
