Sticking to soprano sax but adding vocals to the electrified mix, MAE.SUN features Niswanger’s original compositions as realized by her and new bandmates Nikara Warren (vibraphone), Andrew Renfroe (guitar), Axel Laugart (keyboards), Aaron Liao (keyboard bass) and David Frazier, Jr. (drums). Alternating between in tone between blissed out ambient and pulsating funk, MAE.SUN’s debut album, Vol. 1: Inter-be, was released in early November.
Niswanger herself is no stranger to playing in disparate musical settings. A Berklee College of Music and Vail Jazz Workshop alumna, she’s performed with the likes of James Moody, Joe Lovano and Terri Lyne Carrington. She’s also worked with fellow Portlander and genre-crosser Esperanza Spalding and done TV gigs with pop star Demi Lovato on Saturday Night Live and with indie rockers Sleigh Bells on the Late Show with David Letterman. As a leader, Niswanger has recorded three albums that showcase both her acoustic and electric sides.
MAE.SUN will be a new experience for the Bay Area that features Niswanger continuing to shine in a completely new musical setting.
