Marcel Smith

Aug 13, Sunday - 12:30pm
Blues/Big Easy Stage

Born in Sacramento, CA, Marcel Smith has remained a staple on the California music scene for over 40 years. His vocal approach will remind you of Sam Cooke and Otis Redding rolled into one.

Having shared the stage with gospel, blues, and soul royalty such as Al Green, Bobby Womack, and John Lee Hooker, Marcel attacks a song with feeling and conviction, reaching new musical heights with every note. Marcel Smith’s passion is rooted in the traditional quartet gospel styles.

In 1981, Marcel joined the local gospel group the W.D. Brothers (eventually would be W.D. Gospel Singers) and would begin a musical journey that would afford him many opportunities in the ensuing years. In 1986, Marcel was recruited to local blues band the Soul Prophets, which would grow to become one of the best blues bands in Sacramento. In 1993 the Soul Prophets won the SAMMIES best Blues Band award sharing it with veteran blues band Little Charlie and the Nightcats. Marcel would continue working with both W.D. Gospel Singers and the Soul Prophets, sometimes appearing on the same blues festivals or club venues.
