After Maze relocated to the Bay Area in 1971, the band caught the ear of Marvin Gaye, who took them on the road as an opening act, earning them legions of fans. They landed a recording deal with Capitol Records in 1977, which resulted in their debut album, Maze Featuring Frankie Beverly, giving them their first gold record. Eight other gold albums followed in rapid succession, including Golden Time of Day, Inspiration and 1985’s Can’t Stop the Love, which featured the group’s first number one R&B hit “Back In Stride.” 1981’s Live in New Orleans produced the single “Before I Let Go,” which became a celebrated anthem of Summer and has been covered by everyone from Mary J. Blige to Beyonce.
For 50 years, the heart and soul of Maze has been Frankie Beverly, an astonishing performer and prolific songwriter who penned Maze’s long list of hit singles. Known for his liquid baritone and charismatic stage presence, Beverly was born in Philadelphia and grew up steeped in the sound of “Philadelphia Soul” and gospel music. In 1959, at the age of 13, Beverly sang with an ensemble called The Silhouettes, and by 16, he formed an a cappella doo-wop ensemble called The Blenders. Inspired by Frankie Lymon and the Teenagers, the R&B doo-wop icon, Beverly changed his first name to emulate Lymon. Capping a lifetime of accolades, Beverly received the Lifetime Achievement Award at the Black Entertainment Television (BET) Awards In 2012. He also performed at the 2019 Essence Festival at the Mercedes-Benz Superdome in New Orleans.

Beverly will perform a couple of Maze’s signature classics before literally handing over the mic to Maze’s new lead singer Tony Lindsay, who also happens to be a San Jose Jazz Board member.
