Nick Panoutsos Quartet

Aug 11, Saturday - 4pm
SJMA Next Gen Stage

Bassist Nick Panoutsos has become an increasingly prominent voice in the Bay Area jazz scene, with a rapidly growing freelance career in New York. His quartet features a mix of original music and re-imagined arrangements of jazz standards, drawing inspiration from the post-bop era of the 1960s.

Originally from San Jose, Panoutsos divides his time between the Bay Area and New York, where he is pursuing a degree in Jazz Studies at New York University. His freelance work involves performing, composing and recording on both coasts. Over the last three years, he has performed at San Jose Jazz Summer Fest in addition to Café Pink House and New York’s Silvana jazz club. Throughout his time in New York, he has collaborated with Queens-based singer songwriter duendita and studied with renowned drummer Lenny White.

From January to May of 2018, Panoutsos studied in Paris, where he played with up-and-coming local musicians and performed at the renowned club Duc Des Lombards alongside Parisian pianist Sébastien Paindestre. He has also performed alongside notable Bay Area musicians Marcus Wolfe and Wally Schnalle. His quartet recently recorded a collection of original music, and he continues to compose regularly. In addition to his work as a freelance performer, he teaches private lessons on both upright and electric bass.
