Oscar Hernández and Alma Libre

Aug 12, Saturday - 1pm
Silicon Valley Community Foundation Hammer Theatre Stage

Long considered one of the most gifted and prominent pianists/arrangers on the contemporary Latin jazz and salsa music scenes, three-time GRAMMY Award winner Oscar Hernández, leader of world renowned Spanish Harlem Orchestra, appears in a more intimate context with his quintet, Alma Libre.

Hernandez’s career as a professional began in the ‘70s performing and recording with such seminal artists as Ismael Miranda, Tito Puente, Ray Barreto, Celia Cruz, Conjunto Libre, Pete “El Conde” Rodriguez, and Grupo Folklorico. Increasingly in demand as a pianist, arranger and producer in the years since, the Bronx native has produced such artists as Ruben Blades (he’s also Blades’ musical director), Paul Simon, Willie Colón, Daniel Ponce, Rafael Dejesus, Eddie Torres, Phil Hernandez, Steve Kroon, and Juan Luis Guerra.

Currently, Hernandez is the leader of the world-renowned Spanish Harlem Orchestra (SHO). Since the band’s inception in 2001, SHO have garnered numerous awards and worldwide acclaim as one of the finest exponents of Salsa and Latin/Jazz music

In addition to leading New York’s Spanish Harlem Orchestra, Oscar also leads an All Star Salsa Orchestra in Los Angeles and performs with his Latin Jazz quintet. Alma Libre. His new quintet release, The Art of Latin Jazz, was released this past March.
