Pacific Mambo Orchestra

Aug 12, Saturday - 8:30pm
Salsa Stage

Led by pianist Christian Tumalan and trumpeter Steffen Kuehn, Pacific Mambo Orchestra reinvents the Latin big band sounds of the 1940s through ‘60s, recalling the legendary works of Machito, Tito Puente and Celia Cruz.

Pacific Mambo Orchestra (PMO) revives the traditions of the classic mambo-craze orchestras of the 1950s to deliver their original music and clever, modern arrangements of hit songs. Their arrangements and original compositions proceed at an energetic pace, creating a special kind of excitement that can only be delivered by a true Latin big band. PMO’s sizzling, self-titled debut earned a Grammy Award in 2014 for Best Tropical Latin Album. With a repertoire of mostly original scores, richly textured arrangements flow through the entire production, with exquisite playing by ace musicians.

The band’s instrumentation consists of four trumpets, four trombones, five saxophones, piano, bass, timbales, congas and bongos, fronted by lead singers Alexa W. Morales and Armando Cordoba. Powered by a sensational percussion section featuring Venezuelan timbalero Omar Ledezma Jr., congero Javier Cabanillas and Peruvian bongo expert Braulio Barrera, this salsa super group brings together savvy improvisers forged in the region’s most celebrated Latin bands.

PMO released its second album, Live from Stern Grove Festival, in April. It features Sheila E. and GRAMMY Award Winnter Marlow Rosado. Count on the group’s Summer Fest set to feature selections from their latest release.
