San Jose Jazz High School All Stars

Aug 11, Saturday - 12pm Noon
Sushi Confidential Stage

Dr. Aaron Lington, a 2014 Grammy Award winner and director of the Jazz Studies program at San Jose State University, leads this group comprised of young musicians from 10 regional schools. The All Stars have received unanimous “command” performance ratings in both big band and combo formats at the Santa Cruz Jazz Festival.

The audition-based big band and combo perform throughout the Bay Area, including such locales as the Computer History Museum, Santa Cruz Jazz Festival, San Jose Museum of Art, San Jose’s San Pedro Square Market, San Jose State University Jazz Festival, San Jose Jazz Winter Fest and Summer Fest, “TOSPS Tuesdays” downtown music series, and more. Auditions take place in November each year.

The SJZ High School All Stars is a regional, audition-based music education program for students who are interested in the study and performance of jazz. The program includes a large ensemble and a combo. It’s designed to help students achieve a mastery of improvisation techniques while advancing their knowledge of music theory, arranging, composition, performance, and jazz history. Participation includes weekly rehearsals at San José State University and performances in professional venues. The program is under the direction of Dr. Aaron Lington, professor of music and coordinator of the Jazz Studies Program at San José State University and a 2014 Grammy® winner for his performance and composition work with Pacific Mambo Orchestra.
