Sandy Cressman and Homenagem Brasileira

Aug 11, Saturday - 2:30pm
Heritage Bank Cafe Stritch Stage

The Bay Area boasts a deep well of Brazilian musical richness, and Sandy Cressman has been one of its heralded practitioners and advocates. For over 20 years, the composer and vocalist explored Brazil’s vast post-bossa nova songbook and started to contribute her own songs to the rich tradition.

The founder and leader of Homenagem Brasileira, Cressman has interpreted the work of Brazilian masters such as Hermeto Pascoal, Ivan Lins, Gilberto Gil, Milton Nascimento and Filó Machado. She’s also collaborated with the likes of pianists Antonio Adolfo, Jovino Santos Neto and Marcos Silva. Her own tight knit group consists of husband Jeff Cressman on trombone, Murray Low on keyboards, bassist David Belove and drummer Phil Hawkins with her handling percussion as well as vocal duties.

On Cressman’s latest album, Entre Amigos, both her Rio-accented Portuguese and her considerable songwriting skills are on full display. The fact that special guests such as master keyboardist David K. Matthews, multi-talented clarinetist/tenor saxophonist Harvey Wainapel and powerhouse drummer Dennis Chambers all sound like Homenagem Brasileira regulars is a testament to her bandleading prowess.

With Sandy Cressman’s artistry, 2018 Summer Fest audiences are transported some 6500 miles southeast from the cozy comfort of downtown San Jose’s Cafe Stritch.
