Comprised mainly of students from Oakland’s School of the Arts, the Flannels showcase an infectious youthful exuberance that’s helping them prove jazz music can still rock a party.
The Flannels formed organically after a series of summer gigs together proved fruitful. Taking a grassroots approach to spreading their music, group members got started by throwing backyard shows. They’ve since played at Oakland Style Lab, and made their club debut at Amado’s in San Francisco in April.
As noted in a recent feature from KQED Arts, “their name perfectly encapsulates their do-it-yourself, down-to-earth vibe synonymous with an oversized plaid flannel shirt. And it’s a vibe that is not always associated with jazz music.”
