The JuJu Exchange

Aug 10, Saturday - 3:30pm
Hammer4 Stage

The JuJu Exchange is a musical partnership of three childhood friends from Chicago: Nico Segal and brothers  Julian Reid and Nova Zaii (Everett Reid). Formed in 2016, the band creates exploratory and nuanced music that calls us all to wonder and trust.

The trio’s music, mostly instrumental, blends acoustic and digital instruments to further meaningful exchange among seemingly disparate cultures. They hope their music, which blends elements of jazz, hip-hop, R&B and electronic, reminds and inspires the listener to participate in “the kinds of exchange the world so desperately needs.” They call their most recent album, 2023’s JazzRx, “a project of sonic medicine and vitamins made with you in mind.”

The three musicians each bring their specialized influences and experiences to the group: Trumpeter Segal, formerly known as Donnie Trumpet, is heralded for his collaborations with hip-hop superstar Chance the Rapper. Drummer Zaii, who plays his own patented invention, the Nova Portals, has degrees in jazz studies and performance arts technology. Keyboardist Julian Reid earned a Master’s degree in Divinity and also works as a writer and teacher.

If the JuJu Exchange’s music, captured previously on the 2017 studio album Exchange, “helps one to hear the exchange between the musical genres they play (jazz, hip-hop, gospel, classical, folk), may that help you see the cultures that birthed these art forms and the continued exchange these cultures need to have today. And if their music does nothing else, may it remind you that you are special and that the world needs you to participate in the exchange.”
