Tower of Power

Aug 7, Friday - 9:30pm
Kaiser Permanente Main Stage

Simply put, Oakland’s Tower of Power is the very definition of funk — as well as one of the most durable and iconic bands of all time. TOP’s musical odyssey began in 1968 when tenor saxophonist Emilio Castillo met baritone saxist Stephen “Doc” Kupka. The first incarnation of the band that would become Tower of Power soon built a reputation as one of the most exciting and virtuosic outfits in the country. And they haven’t stopped since!

Tower of Power today remains constantly in demand, having recorded with hundreds of artists as diverse as Aerosmith, Elton John, Little Feat, Phish, Santana, Heart and many others. The TOP horns — still including Castillo and Kupka — are considered one of the best front lines in the world. In addition, the group features original bassist Francis “Rocco” Prestia. TOP has also nurtured some of the most beloved and talented vocalists of the past five decades.

Tower celebrated their 40th anniversary in 2008 at a very special reunion show at the Fillmore Auditorium in San Francisco. In addition to the 10 current members of the band, another 20 musicians and vocalists that at one time held a position with the band appeared with them. The show was filmed and is available on DVD. Each year Tower of Power tours the United States, Japan and Europe, playing to sold out crowds worldwide.
