2018 Lineup / Jazz Beyond

Programming for the SJZ Jazz Beyond series has been co-presented by Universal Grammar (UG) since 2010. UG has been in step with the new vanguard of jazz by presenting musicians such as Kamasi Washington, Robert Glasper, Jose James, Hiatus Kaiyote and Flying Lotus. These artists have played a major role in an evolving music industry, with sounds that reflect elements of jazz, hip hop, electronic, soul, funk, afro-latin, house and R&B. San Jose Jazz and UG have forged a relationship to present Thundercat, Taylor McFerrin, B.Lewis, Miles Bonny, Sonnymoon, Knwledge, J Rocc, Karriem Riggins, Kris Bowers, Miguel Atwood-Ferguson, Moses Sumney and others. This year’s lineup exemplifies the modern sonic landscape that is Jazz Beyond.

Jessica Lá Rel is a recording artist, songwriter and storyteller from Chicago. Her “cinematic soul” sound can be likened to an orchestra traveling from the south side of Chicago to Ghana. Known for her soaring vocals and thrilling live performances, Lá Rel releases her LP, War Love, later this year.

During the 1990s, Bobbito Garcia was one-half of the “Stretch and Bobbito” program on WKCR. The duo introduced the world to an unsigned Nas, Biggie and Wu-Tang, as well as an unknown Jay-Z, Eminem and the Fugees. In 1998, the Source Magazine voted them as “The Best Hip Hop Radio Show of All Time.”

Oakadelic is a funk, soul and R&B collective at the heart of the Bay Area’s funk scene. Primarily an instrumental ensemble led by horns, the group combines its roots in ‘50s and ‘60s jazz improvisation with an extension to ‘70s and ‘80s funk.
